Planning Tips for Beginners

1. Start Small – Starting with a large garden can be overwhelming, start small to ensure success. 1 or 2 4×8 foot beds are a perfect start and manageable. Once you have success, expand after the first growing season in the fall.

2. Only Start With A Handful of Different Vegetables – It can be exciting to plant many different crops, but the more varieties you introduce the more complexity it adds. Start with only a handful of vegetables you enjoy eating.

3. Try Starting Seeds YourselfBut, also buy some from a nursery to ensure success! Herbs are perfect to pick up at a nursery and reduce the complexity it starting them yourself.

4. Take Notes – Make sure you take notes (and pictures) of your progress throughout the season. You can reflect back on them next season.

Disclaimer!

Gardening has so many variables and external factors, everyone’s outcome will be different. By purchasing a plan and using our schedule, getting started guide, grow guide and plant placement there is no guarantee you will have a successful garden. We shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or revenues, whether incurred directly or indirectly, or any loss of data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses, resulting from using this service.

Our plant placement is a suggestion based on plant height according to the sun’s direction based on the vegetables you selected and the garden layout you drew. This is a suggestion only. There is x number of combinations that could be successful.

Our schedule uses the last expected frost date for the national weather station nearest to your zip code. This date is an estimate based on historical climate data. Since this is an estimate and weather changes, there could be a freeze after this date. If you would like to be more conservative, you can shift your schedule forward a week or two, and make sure you check the weather forecast for frost before putting out warm weather crops. If you are creating a plan after your last frost date, some of the scheduling activities may be in the past.

  1. Tim was great! I’m a first-time gardener and I spent days trying to figure out where to put things in my garden. Tall plants block sun, some plants need trellises, few plants like bunking next to onions, etc; I needed to either learn a library of information or make every possible mistake a gardener can make. If you are new to gardening and you think you don’t need this, you are wrong. I ended up needing to add a few things and scrap a few things that won’t work well in an elevated bed like mine and Tim very patiently revised my plan so it ended up perfect for me. In addition, he sent links to his free videos that were applicable such as separate strawberry beds, Tim was VERY helpful, VERY patient, and VERY informative. Initially, I felt purchasing a garden plan was a luxury and perhaps an unnecessary expense but after the process, I truly believe that small investment saved me lots of money, lost produce, and oh so precious time and labor.

  2. Everything about this is WONDERFUL! It’s so easy and Tim had my garden plan to me within a couple hours and happily reworked it to include trellises for me. I HIGHLY recommend getting a plan and all the tips and knowledge that comes with it! Thank you for your great customer service, Tim!

    1. Hi Lexi – So glad you are happy with your vegetable garden plan! Thank for choosing Plan My Garden! Happy Growing, Tim

  3. Hello,
this sounds amazing for a beginner like me.
I’d love to give it a try but i live in Europe, is it possible for me to get the plan?
Or are the Zipcodes America only?

    1. Hello Mina! Yes, this is perfect for beginners. Right now the zipcode lookup only works for USA zipcodes, I am working on adding am option to allow users to enter their last frost manually. However, we do have a work around where you can use a USA zipcode that has a comparable last frost date to your location. I have updated this page with those instructions and you can see our FAQ question “Help! What if my location is not available?” with instructions on how to find your last frost date and a list USA zipcode that will that will return last frost dates for each week from Jan to June – https://gardening.organicbackyardgardening.com/User/FrequentQuestions

  4. I just tried the “Plan my garden” feature and I am super impressed! While I’m no stranger to gardening, I am a fumbling black thumb with technology! This feature is VERY user friendly. I was able to easily plan my garden for the upcoming growing season WITHOUT issue. What a great tool you have created for Gardeners of various experiences. Great job and highly recommend.

    1. Hi Danielle! I am so glad to hear you found the process super easy and were able to plan your garden! Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback – I really appreciate it! – Tim
