How Many Pepper Plants per Square Foot?
1 pepper plant per square foot, bell peppers and hot peppers alike. In a 4 x 4 bed that is 16 pepper plants, which is more than most families need, so mix in other crops.

A pepper plant is a small bush about a foot across and it fruits best with air moving around it. One per square keeps the leaves off each other and makes a pepper bed easy to pick.
Planting the square
- Start peppers indoors 8 to 10 weeks before your last frost; they are slow.
- Set one transplant in the center of each square after the soil has warmed.
- Stake taller varieties once they carry fruit; a loaded pepper plant tips over.

When to plant peppers

How I grow them, in brief
I start peppers indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost in extra-deep cell packs, give the seedlings strong light and a low dose of organic fish and seaweed fertilizer once they have true leaves, and pot them up as they outgrow the cells. By eight weeks they are budding, which is the sign they want to be in the garden. Each goes into a hole twice as wide as the root ball, one per square, and gets 1 to 2 inches of water a week. Sweet peppers are picked fully colored, hot peppers as they start to turn.
