How Many Taps per Maple Tree? Tree Size and Tap Counts
One tap for a tree 10 to 18 inches across, two taps for 18 to 25 inches, and three taps only on a very healthy tree over 25 inches, which is the most any tree should ever carry. That is the modern, conservative guidance from University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Utah State University Extension, measured at breast height (DBH), about 4.5 feet up the trunk. Older guidelines allowed more taps on the same size tree. Staying on the conservative side keeps a backyard tree healthy for tapping again next year.
Taps by tree diameter, current guidance
The University of Maine Cooperative Extension, in its 2025 revision of Bulletin #7036, puts it plainly: before tapping, a tree should be at least 10 inches in diameter. Trees between 10 and 18 inches get one tap. A second tap may be added between 18 and 25 inches. Only very healthy trees over 25 inches can sustain three, and no tree should ever have more than three. Measuring diameter at breast height (DBH)
Wrap a regular tape measure around the trunk at breast height, about 4.5 feet up, and read the circumference. Then divide by pi (3.14): diameter = circumference ÷ 3.14. A 44 inch circumference is a 14 inch diameter (1 tap); a 57 inch circumference is an 18 inch diameter (2 taps). The Minnesota DNR’s Project Learning Tree guide describes the same method for anyone without a diameter tape. If the tree forks below breast height, measure each trunk separately; if it forks above, measure it as one tree.
Which maples you can tap, and what a tap yields
Sugar maple (Acer saccharum) has the highest sugar content and is the classic choice, but it is not the only tappable tree. University of Maine Extension notes red maple (Acer rubrum) also gives sweet sap, and University of Minnesota Extension adds silver maple (Acer saccharinum) and boxelder (Acer negundo) to the list. Utah State University Extension’s guide is built entirely around boxelder and Norway maple (Acer platanoides), two common species in a state with few sugar maples, and notes that any tree in the genus Acer can be tapped. Minnesota’s own diameter rule is tighter than Maine’s: no more than two taps in any tree over 20 inches, with no allowance for a third tap at any size.
How much one tap gives you varies by tree, weather and year. University of Maine Extension puts the average full season yield for a single taphole at 5 to 15 gallons of sap, with 40 to 60 gallons possible in an especially good year, roughly a quarter gallon of finished syrup per tap. Older guidance allowed more taps
If a tapping chart looks too generous, it may be an old one. Cornell forestry professor Brian Chabot traced the history of these guidelines in the Maple Syrup Digest: a 1928 Cornell bulletin allowed two buckets on any tree over 12 inches DBH and three on trees up to 20 inches. A 1935 Cornell revision went further: one bucket for 10 to 15 inches, two for 16 to 20 inches, three for 21 to 25 inches, and four buckets on any tree 26 inches and over. A 1937 Penn State bulletin was similarly generous, suggesting a 16 inch tree could carry four buckets. A “traditional” rule still referenced in some manuals is simpler still: one tap for every 5 inches of diameter above 10 inches, which allows four or more taps on a large tree.
Research since then has pushed toward fewer taps, not more. A 2005 follow-up by the same Cornell researcher argued that many sugarbushes should limit trees to a single tap regardless of size, because slow-growing trees can take decades to grow enough new wood to safely retap the same spot. The conservative guidelines used today already reflect that shift. For a backyard tree tapped just once a year, staying at or below the current numbers, and never above three taps, is the safer call.
Tapping practices that protect the tree
A few practices from University of Maine and Utah State Extension keep a tree healthy enough to tap again next year and for years after:
- Drill 1.5 to 2 inches deep with a clean, sharp 5/16 inch bit, level and horizontal so sap flows out on its own. A dull or oversized bit tears wood fiber and can reduce sap yield.
- Use a fresh spot every year. Don’t drill within 6 inches to the side of an old taphole, or within 2 feet directly above or below one. Utah State’s guide moves each year’s hole at least 1 inch sideways and 8 to 12 inches up or down from the last, working a loose spiral around the trunk over several years.
- Don’t tap small or stressed trees. A tree under 10 inches DBH is not worth tapping, and unhealthy trees take longer to heal over a taphole, inviting disease and insects. Pick trees with full, healthy crowns and no significant dead wood.
- Tap on a warm day, and don’t overdrive the spout. Driving a spout too hard, especially in cold wood, can split the bark.
A healthy sugar maple can be tapped for well over a century, so the goal every February is the same: take a season’s worth of sap without leaving the tree worse off for next winter.
