How Many Cucumbers per Square Foot?
2 cucumber plants per square foot, grown up a trellis. That is the square foot chart number and it assumes the vines climb. Let them run on the ground and one plant takes several squares.

Cucumbers are vines with small root systems. Give the vine a trellis on the north side of the bed and two plants share a square comfortably, the fruit hangs straight, and you can see it to pick it. Sprawling on the soil, the same plants shade everything around them.
Planting the square
- Put the trellis up first, on the north side of the bed.
- Sow 2 seeds at each of 2 points along the trellis edge of the square, about half an inch deep, once the soil is above 60°F; thin to one at each point.
- Guide the first tendrils onto the trellis and they climb on their own.

Soil temperature for germination
From my Seed Germination Temperature Chart: cucumbers germinate from 60°F, do best at 65-95°F, and stop above 105°F.

When to plant cucumbers
These are the windows the Plan My Garden planner uses, counted from your average last spring frost. Enter your frost date on the seed starting calendar to turn them into dates. I start mine only two weeks before the last frost and set them out two weeks after it; they grow fast and hate cold.

How I grow them, in brief
Three steps: build the structure first, train the plant up it, prune as it grows. My trellis is a conduit frame that sits in the 4 x 8 bed with a string dropped for each plant; I tie the string loosely at the base and wind the vine up it as it grows. The lower leaves come off so the base stays open and dry, the bed is mulched heavily with grass clippings over drip irrigation, and I water daily at the root and never overhead, because wet leaves are how cucumbers get sick. Pick every cucumber before it fattens and stripes. Production slows in late summer no matter what, so I start a second set of plants in early summer. Full method in How to Grow Cucumbers Vertically.

Quick questions
How many cucumber plants in a 4 x 8 bed?
Along the 8-foot trellis side, 8 squares at 2 per square is 16 plants, and that is plenty; most people plant 4 to 6.
Do I have to trellis?
No, but on the ground one plant covers 3 to 4 squares, so the 2-per-square number only holds if they climb.
