How Many Zucchini Plants per Square Foot?
One zucchini plant per four square feet. A bush zucchini spreads into a 2 x 2 foot block, so the square foot chart gives it four squares. Grown vertically on a single stake, the way I do it, one plant fits in a single square with room to walk past it.
The spacing pattern

Zucchini leaves are enormous and the plant keeps producing all summer, so it earns its space. The trick is that most of that space is leaves, not roots: stake the main stem and prune the lower leaves and the plant stands up in one square instead of sprawling over four.
Planting the square
- Give the plant the center of a 2 x 2 foot block, or the center of one square if you will stake it.
- Sow 2 seeds about an inch deep once the soil is above 60°F and keep the stronger seedling.
- If staking, tie the main stem to the stake as it grows and remove the lowest leaves so the plant stands up.

How I grow them, in brief
I grow zucchini upright in the square foot garden. A stake goes in at planting, the main stem gets tied to it every foot or so as it grows, and I cut off the lowest leaves as they age so the plant stands up like a small tree with air moving underneath. Grown that way the fruit hangs straight and uniform, it is easy to see and pick, and one plant sits in a single square with room to walk past. Harvest every day or two at 6 to 8 inches; one overgrown zucchini left on the plant slows everything down. How many zucchini plants does a family need?
Two plants keep most families in zucchini all summer. Grown vertically that is two squares of a 4 x 4 bed.
Can zucchini share a square with anything?
Not comfortably. Even staked, the leaves shade the neighboring squares, so put low crops like lettuce on the shady side and taller ones elsewhere.
