Having a well-planned garden is essential for a successful vegetable harvest, however planning a garden for beginners can be intimidating. Many new gardeners are not successful because they don’t have a plan upfront to guide them – creating a garden plan from scratch can be overwhelming. The two major factors to think about when planning a garden, are garden layout which is the placement, the planting schedule, or the vegetable planting calendar.
The two major factors to think about when planning: Garden Layout, Placement, and Planting Schedule/Calendar.
Placement/Garden Layout:
- What is the size of your garden space?
- Garden Direction In Relation to the Sun?
- Which plants do you want to include and how much of each?
- Where should each plant be positioned and how much space should be left between them?
- What are the heights of each plant?
Scheduling/Vegetable Planting Calendar.:
- What is the optimal time to start each plant for your local climate?
- Can you start the seeds indoors or should you directly sow them?
- If you do start them indoors, when should you transplant them?
- Are there any plants that are best suited for direct sowing and not transplanting?
Got It, So How Do I Easily Plan My Garden From Scratch?
Planning a Garden From Scratch can be done the traditional way, which involves sketching out the beds on graph paper, drawing out the placements, and researching the growth details of each vegetable. This is the manual garden layout planner. You would then create a planting schedule or vegetable planting calendar based on the last expected frost date.
The Plan My Garden App takes care of this for you, which is why it’s so helpful.
It’s an intuitive square-foot garden layout garden planner and custom vegetable planting calendar that makes it incredibly easy for you to get your customized perfect plan. Just answer a few questions in the plan my garden app which only takes minutes. You then receive by email your customized PDF plans. Each custom plan only costs $39.

Step 2 – Draw Your Garden Layout in the Garden Planner
The next section is where you draw your garden layout. This grid is a 20×20 square foot area by default, you can increase or decrease to plot size with the buttons above. To draw your layout click on each box. You can multi-select by clicking, holding shift, then clicking a range. In this example, I drew 2 4×8 raised beds. When drawing keep in mind the orientation, north is up. This is a critical factor used to recommend an optimal plant placement in your garden layout.
At the bottom of the grid, there is a total square foot, this shows how many square 64 Square Feet.
Step 3 – Select Which Vegetables You Want to Grow And How Much in the Garden Planner
Select from the wide list of available vegetables and herbs what you want to grow and how much garden space you want to allocate to each. As you increase the square footage you’ll see the plant number increase automatically based on how many plants can be grown per square foot. For most plants, 1 or many plants can fit in 1 square foot. Some larger vegetables like tomatoes require 4 square feet per 1 plant, and you’ll see this defaults to 4, and the selector increases by a multiple of 4.
At any time you can decrease or increase growing space. If you remove too much, you’ll see your available goes negative, if this happens decrease plants, or add more space.
When you are at 0 space left you are ready to submit your plan.

It’s sorted by what activities you should do first. I really like this because I can print out and have it somewhere I can see it, instead of having to look on my phone or an app.

Don’t Forget Seeds
As you are planning your spring garden, now is the time to reorganize and identify which seeds you need more of for your garden next spring. When reorganizing your seeds, be sure to check the expiration date. Many seeds only remain viable for a year or two, if they are expired, might be time to replace them. I recommend high-mowing organic seeds.
