- Enter Your Zipcode – You enter your zipcode so we and determine your last expected frost date.
- Draw Your Layout – Step 2 provides a drawing area comprised of boxes that are each 1 square foot. Draw your garden beds by clicking into the area to highlight a square foot. If you have a 4×8 bed, you would select 32 squares. Draw your layout with the north up. To multi-select, select a square, then while holding the SHIFT key select another square. Your total square feet selected will display at the bottom of the drawing area.
Select what you want to grow and how much – For each plant, enter the number of Sq.Ft. of garden space you want to allocate. The “Total Plants” field will automatically be updated based on how many plants can be grown per Sq.Ft. for that crop. Allocate all your space before submitting.

Your plant layout is determined by the height of the vegetables you select and the orientation of your garden according to the sunrise and sunset. Other factors specific to the number of beds you have and other plant details are taken into consideration as well.
Generally larger vegetables are placed in the north and the west, while medium vegetables are toward the center and the smallest to the southeast.
This is done so larger vegetables do not shade out shorter vegetables.
Spacing recommendations are based on the square foot method to maximize yields.
Please note that these are recommendations, if you feel you want to slightly adjust during planting feel free to do so.
If you enter your zipcode and we identify you are in a frost free area, we will display a notification. You can select a last expected frost date early in the year for planning purposes – for example 1/31 or 2/15.
Plan My Garden focused on plant placement based on plant height, in relation to the sun, and spacing according to plant size. Undoubtedly, plants influence each other. There are many claims on the internet and charts, however, because there is little science behind the concept of companion planting, it can be difficult to really know what works well in your garden. We recommend focusing on soil health by amending the soil with organic compost every season, mulching with organic matter, and focusing on diversity in the garden. This is what we have done for years with excellent results. Here are two excellent links discussing the thorny subject of companion planting.

Plan My Garden is most effectively utilized during the winter months through early spring. Ideally anytime 14 weeks before your last expected frost (enter your zipcode here in step 1 to get your last expected frost). By getting a custom plan during this period, you will have a strategic schedule. This will enable you to identify the ideal times for beginning indoor seed starting, transitioning seedlings outdoors, and directly sowing crops to ensure a bountiful early harvest. The reason 14 weeks is highlighted is that some plants that need a long indoor lead time such as Onions, which can be started indoors 12 weeks prior to your last expected frost.
Hence, the sooner you engage in planning, the more advantageous it is! Another good reminder of when to use plan my garden is as soon as you start getting seed catalogs in the mail.
If you submit a plan after your last expected, indoor seed seed-starting activities will have already passed. There’s no need for concern, though! You can still proceed with directly sowing your crops. Nevertheless, if the last expected frost date has significantly lapsed and you reside in the northern states of the USA, certain plants like tomatoes and peppers might not have sufficient time to mature before the onset of the first frost. In such scenarios, we recommend opting for varieties with shorter growth seasons or acquiring established seedlings from a local nursery.
